What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a minor in-office procedure in which the surface epithelium is gently exfoliated. It is much more gentle than laser skin resurfacing procedures, and is not intended to treat the deeper wrinkles. Microdermabrasion is designed to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, minimize blemishes and pigmented skin lesions due to sun damage, reduce open pore sizes, minimize acne scars, and eliminate white and black heads.
Unlike the stronger chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion requires no anesthesia, local injections, or sedation. The procedure gently removes the top layer of skin without any pain. The skin is typically left with a slight blush that lasts only about 24 hours. Patients may return to work immediately following the procedure. No medications are required and cosmetics may be applied immediately afterwards. Darker skinned patients that may not be good candidates for either chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing may be treated with microdermabrasion as well.
For best results, most patients need one treatment every one to two weeks for 6 sessions, followed by one treatment every month for maintenance. Most patients will notice considerable improvement in the smoothness and tightness of their skin after several treatments. Microdermabrasion should not be considered as a replacement to the laser skin resurfacing procedures, but rather, should be thought of as an adjunct to the armamentarium of skin treatments presently available.
At The Bournemouth Laser and Skincare Clinic we have two different types of microdermabrasion systems available. Those being the Ultrapeel and the Diamondtome
The Ultrapeel Microdermabrasion system
Microdermabrasion is the revolutionary new treatment using fine aluminium oxide/salt crystals to gently refine and resurface the skin and is suitable for the following conditions:
- Acne
- Post acne scarring
- Scars
- Hyper pigmentation
- stretch marks
How it works
A jet of fine crystals are vacuumed across the skin removing the dead and damaged skin cells promoting faster skin regeneration. The treatment is comfortable without any side effects and clients can go back to their normal daily routine immediately after treatment.
Suitable for all skin types, greatly enhancing overall skin condition. Textural changes are noted after just one treatment, although often a course of six treatments is recommended.
Home care advice is given, and treatment may be further enhanced by cosmeceutical grade skin management program, tailored to the individuals concern.
Diamondtome Skin Resurfacing Sysytem
The Diamondtome system is a type of microdermabrasion that removes the top most layer of your skin leaving it supple and vibrant. The diamond tone wand removes the layer of skin by gently exfoliating the skin with natural diamond chips while at the same time vacuuming out the pores and the dead skin cells. Removing the outer layer of dead skin cells leaves a smoother texture and promotes the growth of healthy new cells. Microdermabrasion is a wonderful alternative to lasers and skin peels because this technique is non invasive and non surgical and requires no downtime. Normal activity may be resumed immediately. Your skin may be left with a radiant glow free of irritation and loose particles. Patient's immediately experience softer, smoother, and cleaner skin even after the first treatment. A treatment series varies from four to ten sessions depending on the condition being treated and the type of your skin. Microdermabrasion has been used effectively to treat:
- Reduces acne scars
- Extracts blackheads and whiteheads
- Improves minor scars
- Reduces hyperpigmentation of the skin
- Reduces oily skin
- Rejuvenates aging skin of the face, forehead, and around the eyes
- Sun damaged skin of the face, neck, shoulders, age spots of the hands and feet.
