A Chemical peel is exactly what it says: peeling of the skin using a chemical. A chemical peel removes the outer layers of the skin. This freshens the skin, removes some sunspots and rough scaly patches, and reduces freckles and irregular pigmentation. It also reduces fine wrinkles and is beneficial for acne and some acne scarring.
There is some evidence that it may reduce the risk of skin cancer. It is safest and most effective on the face. Hands can be peeled but the risk of scarring is higher and the results less predictable.
There are several types of chemical peel, each using different chemicals and fruit acids. Light and medium depth peels use TCA (Trichloroacetic acid) Peel. The gentler alternative is available in the form of a Glycolic Acid Peel.
Md. Formulations Glycolic Peel
For twenty years MD Formulations has been at the forefront of skin care treatments and products containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids and other specialised ingredients. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's) are naturally occurring substances that have been used for centuries to improve the appearance of skin. Of all the AHA's, Glycolic Acid derived from sugar cane, has the greatest ability to penetrate the skin due to its smaller molecular size.
Glycolic Acid has the ability to act as a 'super moisturiser' for the skin. In addition and perhaps more importantly it unglues and dislodges dead skin cells from the outer surface of the skin, leaving the skin fresher and smoother. These properties enable glycolic acid to be used in reducing the signs of sun damage, pigmentation, acne and in growing hairs.
MD Formulations products have been developed in conjunction with a Glycolic Peel treatment formula for beauty therapists and a Physician's peel formula for medical proffessionals. These deeply exfoliating treatments decrease the manifestations of sun damage in the skin from fine lines to evening skin tone, reducing discolourations, dryness and scaliness. Clinical studies confirm reduction of both inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions in acne. MD Formulations products containing Glycolic Acid are completely compatible with Retinova.

TCA Peel (trichloroacetic peel)
The TCA peel works by causing sloughing or removal of the upper layers of skin. Normally these are the layers that are damaged by the elements such as sun, wind and neglect. By removing the upper layers of skin, the overall skin texture is dramatically smoothed, superficial wrinkles are quickly eliminated and colour irregularities are improved. The advantage of this peel is that the the application is easy and ensures even uptake into the skin. Patients benefit by regaining a fresher more vibrant appearance.
It has been used for many years to treat facial wrinkles, age spots, pigment abnormalities, mask of pregnancy and other superficial skin problems such as sun damaged skin. (Including pre-cancerous lesions), acne / acne scarring, freckles, appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and the appearance of superficial scars.
The TCA Peel is one of the most innovative ways to easily and optimally rejuvenate the skin using a special based formulation.
The Treatment
When TCA is applied to the skin, it causes the top layers of cells to dry up and peel off over a period of several days. When the old skin has peeled off, it exposes a new layer of undamaged skin which has a smoother texture and more even colour.
TCA is applied to your skin. Treatment is administered in a single session, of around 15 - 30 minutes duration. During this period, you may experience a slight burning sensation. This sensation is so slight, no sedation or anesthesia is required.
At the end of your treatment session, you will be provided with a treatment information leaflet. This document acts as a reference card to enable you to maximise the benefits from your treatment.
More than one TCA peel may be needed to achieve the desired result. This will be decided during your free consultation.
Aftercare
After having a TCA peel your new skin will be sensitive to sunlight for at least 6-8 weeks afterwards. During this time it is very important to protect the new skin with sunscreens, hats and the avoidance of strong sunlight.
