A Botox® treatment is a simple, non-surgical procedure that smoothes the deep, persistent lines between brows, around the eyes and across the forehead that develop over time. One 20-minute treatment — a few tiny injections — relaxes the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed for up to 4 months.
The results are dramatic and apparent within days. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of the men and women surveyed rated the improvement in their brow lines as moderate to better. For many, Botox® virtually “erases” these lines.
Unlike surgery, Botox® injections are fast, simple, and minimally invasive, with no downtime or recovery. Most people return directly to work or normal activity following treatment. Within days, they report looking more natural and relaxed. With Botox® injections, they’ll know you’ve done something, they just won’t know what.
This treatment is quite popular, and when used in combination with other rejuvenation treatments, is very successful.
Botox® is a brand name of a naturally occurring bacterial protein, Botulinum toxin type A. We also use the brand Azzalure.
Tiny doses of this substance are injected just under the skin into the muscles that are treated to reduce wrinkles. It specifically blocks the nerve impulse, allowing these muscles responsible for the excessive contractions that cause wrinkles to relax.
You will normally see the benefit in an average of 2 to 3 days although it may take longer for the full effects to be seen. The speed of action will depend on the strength of your facial muscles and your individual response to the injection.
The severity of the lines can be reduced for up to 3 to 5 months.
On your first appointment you will undergo a full consultation with the nurse.
If you wish to proceed with treatment, prior to injecting, any make up will be removed and your skin disinfected. Your practitioner will then study your facial muscles to see how they work, as individuals can differ. The injections should be painless, but a local anaesthetic cream can be used prior to treatment.
You will be injected with a fine needle above and in between your eyebrows and at smile lines. The treatment session will take approximately 15 minutes and you can return to your usual daily activities afterwards.
Your practitioner will tell you more about how to look after your skin following treatment and give you an aftercare card as a reminder.
The most common side effects are headache and injection site reactions such as redness, swelling, irritation, rash, itching, numbness, discomfort, stinging, bruising and bleeding.
Normally these reactions are mild to moderate, reversible and occur in the first week after treatment. Other potential side effects will be discussed during your consultation and are in the information leaflet that you are given.
